The South course was designed by the Basque designer Javier Arana, in two different stages, in both phases he designed nine very different holes.

The first nine holes started at the Guadalmina Hotel, with a par 3 whose main characteristic was that there was only tee and green and the rest of the hole was sand. Another peculiarity of the course was the incorporation of a par 6 hole, something unusual in golf course design, all the holes had a name and this par six was called “Tipperary”.

In its early days, back in 1959, this course was played in two rounds, the par of the course being 74.

In 1965 the Goizueta family again requested the services of the Basque designer, and using the northern part of the estate, next to the Guadalmina river, he produced another 9 holes.  For many years the initial course was maintained, starting next to the hotel and ending at the current 10th hole, thus maintaining one of the trademark features of Javier Arana’s designs, that the 17th hole is always a par three.  A sacrifice was made on the par six, which had its 666 yards reduced.

In time the rest of the estate was developed with the construction of the second golf course, “El Norte” and the Club House designed by  the famous architect D. Luis Gutierrez Soto.  A decision was then taken to modify the order of play, starting next to the Club House and reaching the middle of the course next to the Golf Hotel Guadalmina.

The main character of the south course design is its tight fairways lined with trees that force you to be precise, otherwise the second shot could be adversly affected.

In 2002, after more than forty years, the Club commissioned the designers Stirling & Martin to carry out an integral renovation of the course, applying modern criteria, but maintaining the essence of Javier Arana’s design.

The greens were enlarged, with more movement, and water hazards were introduced to improve the challenge and asthetics of the course.

During the following years some minor changes have been introduced, and we have extended the option of choosing between the various numbered tee boxes. You can choose the one that best suits your game.

The South course of Guadalmina is a par 72 of 6,600 yards.  Once you have enjoyed its manicured fairways, you will remember the course and be left wanting to play it again.
